Student Internships - Student Internships in NGOs across Pakistan

Summer Internship Programme 2007 - Download

*Note - This advertisement is meant for organizations ONLY.

Information for Organizations:

LUMS Social Enterprise Development Center (SEDC) offers internships to LUMS students in NGOs across Pakistan. This program introduces interns to employment possibilities while they receive valuable field experience and build community contacts. We have already offered successful internships in the past. This year again, we would like to work with your organization to offer our students a chance to apply their analytical and communications skills to solve some of the challenges the developing world is facing.

  • What type of internships are students looking for?

Students are looking for internships related to projects that touch the local community, or projects that help your organization such as project evaluation, documentation, HR strategy, marketing plans, organizational structure analysis, etc.

  • Duration

Internships can last anywhere between 6-8 weeks in June, July or August depending upon students availability and your needs.

  • How does the process work?
  1. The development NGO submits an internship request to SEDP, giving details of the start date and duration of the internship, the skills sought and a brief description of the job
  2. SEDP advertises the internship opportunity to LUMS students
  3. SEDP collects and screens resumes to shortlist the qualified candidates and sends them to your organization for a final decision.
  • What do we expect from you?

Our expectations from you are that:

  1. You will offer an internship with a defined scope and job activities that are equivalent with the interns' skill level. If you are unsure about the nature of the internship, please contact us and we will work with you to define an appropriate scope.
  2. You will be responsible for evaluating the intern and suggesting how SEDP can   improve its internship program.

It is preferred that OJA and collaborating partner organization jointly pays an intership stipend to the students.

FAQs about Student Internships
What's in it for me?

  • APPLY YOUR LEARNING: Gain practical experience while applying theoretical knowledge
  • CAREER EXPLORATION: Learn about potential career areas
  • LEARN WHILE YOU SERVE: Become more knowledgeable about specific work functions and learn career-related skills
  • BUILD YOUR RESUME: Internship experience and references gained will help you be more employable
  • MEET PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYERS / NETWORK IN YOUR CHOSEN FIELD: Meet people working in professions that interest you
  • LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF: Find out if you are suited for the career you've been thinking about
  • GET A JOB: Internships may result in job offers
  • EARN MONEY: All internships are paid
  • CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Try something new and different!

What's in it for LUMS?

  • It furthers our commitment to make the future aspiring talent of tomorrow (that's you!) aware about the social sector and thus help in the development process.
  • It provides an opportunity for us to help the NGOs through our productive and highly capable student resource, which is one of the aims of our program.

What's the procedure?

  • Typically students volunteer work for 6-8 weeks during June, July, or August.
  • CVs are sent to various organizations, who then call the candidatesfor an interview.
  • If selected, the student is asked to sign a contract with SEDP stating the stipend to be paid at the end of the internship and other minor requirements.
  • The student is required to submit an Internship Report and a Student Internship Form which will be given to them by the Internship Co-ordinator. A Partner Internship Feedback Form will be filled by the collaborating partner organization to gauge their views on this excercise.

How will the internship be reviewed?

Interns and the team in charge of the internship will write about the experiences gained during the internship on both sides at the end of the intern's term. This discussion is aimed at learning from the insight a student has gained, to voice useful criticism, to redress potential grievances in the future and to further improve the office management.

How do I apply?
Send in your CV for the year 2007, along with your preferred city (Pakistan) for internship and duration, to the Internship Coordinator, Farid Aftab at faridaftab@lums.edu.pk
