 Development of Teaching Material

The Development of Teaching Material component focuses on developing indigenous and contextually specific teaching material on social enterprises in Pakistan , in order to provide non-governmental and district social sector managers with relevant and high quality training.

Teams from LUMS and McGill faculty, with active participation of NGO representatives, will create specialized curricula, course materials and handbooks for trainings and consultations.

NGO cases

Due to a phenomenal growth in the development sector worldwide, there is an acute need for improvement in the management skills and organizational systems of institutions in this sector.

In the context of developing teaching material for NGO management training and capacity building, LUMS-McGill Social Enterprise Development Programme is focusing on developing indigenous and contextually specific teaching material on social enterprises in Pakistan.

At present about  120 cases on various NGOs are being written by the LUMS faculty and by participants of theTraining for Development Programme. These cases are based on organizations such as WWF, Rising Sun School , Family Planning Association of Pakistan, CARE, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Fountain House, Fatima Memorial Hospital , Damen and Aurat Foundation among others.

These cases have been written through collaboration between the LUMS faculty and staff, and managers of NGOs. Development professionals, scholars and researchers worldwide will find this resource valuable.

Publications

A series of five case books: Managing NGOs in Developing Countries have been planned.

Volume 1: Concepts, Frameworks and Cases  and Volume 2: Management Cases from Pakistan have been published by Oxford University Press (OUP). Volume 3: Gender Challenges is now under print, while Volume 4: Caring for Future Generations, and

Volume 5: Health and Environment are being compiled.

The series includes cases on management areas such as Managing People and Organizations, Marketing and Advocacy, Finance and Control, Operations Management and Managing Change.

It is proposed that two more books will be published as follows:

A Manual on Disaster Management in Pakistan and Best Practices in Community Building in Pakistan.

Although there are many books on disaster management, there is a need for indigenous material which is relevant specifically to the nature and extent of disasters in Pakistan , and the resources and infrastructure available within our context.

Disaster management and community building are closely interlinked, hence a book on community building is the logical follow up of a book on the former, keeping in mind the same context.

Another part of this component is the acquisition of books and journals on the subject of social enterprise. This collection of approximately 1,000 books is being maintained in the LUMS library.
