Under
the umbrella of the CIDA funded LUMS-McGill Social Enterprise
Development Centre (SEDC), LUMS has initiated a Social
Enterprise Management Programme (SEMP) with the aim
of providing modern management training to NGO managers.
This
SEMP will be run over a period of four years with one
programme being run every year. Besides Lahore, the
other regional centres will be Karachi and Peshawar.
Each
programme will consist of 5 modules of 2 weeks duration
each. Participants will be expected to complete all
5 modules in order to receive certification. The full
cost of tuition will be covered by CIDA, but participants
will be expected to make their own travel and boarding/lodging
arrangements.
Why is Strengthening
Social Sector Organizations so Important?
As Pakistani society developed over the years, the need
was felt for the provision of various social, environmental
and economic services to our citizens, singly and as
communities. This led to a dynamic growth of non-governmental
organizations as a distinct and significant sector of
our society and our economy. The rapidity with which
the NGO sector has spread has led to a growing need
for improvement in the organizational structures and
management skills in NGOs and community based organizations
that are active in the country. In addition, the recent
decision by the Government of Pakistan to restructure
local government organizations requires that the new
District Social Service Managers should also be trained
in modern management systems and procedures.
The Social Enterprise Development
Centre (SEDC) has responded to this need by developing
a resource centre at LUMS to provide management training
and consultancy services to the non- governmental sector
and the District Social Service Managers. In addition,
the centre will also carry out research in this sector
and serve as a platform for development professionals
to network, collaborate and take on policy initiatives
jointly.
Goal and Objectives
The goal is to develop the capacity of Pakistan's non-governmental
organizations to manage their operations in a sustainable,
effective and efficient manner in order to improve delivery
of social services on a long-term basis.
This is to be delivered by
developing a significant pool of well trained SE managers
in Pakistan in order to promote effectiveness and efficiency
of Social Enterprises in the country as well as building
up the knowledge and skills base of key government District
Social Services Managers to equip them to efficiently
operate social services delivery in their own areas
and to improve upon them.
